Mighty Mouse trackball transplanted into Eee PC 901

In what I would describe as an interesting mod, one Eee PC user decided to install the trackball from an Apple Mighty Mouse into the wrist rest on his Eee PC 901. The project, which took about two hours involved taking the Mighty Mouse apart to get the guts and then soldering, taking the Eee apart and drilling a whole in the wrist rest. Then eventually a little more soldering, some hot glue and reassembly.

All set and done, the mod was noted as giving the user 95% of what he was hoping for. You see, it turns out that the Mighty Mouse uses a built in driver with Windows XP and that driver does not offer the ability to scroll vertically. That said, the modder did note that the lack of horizontal scrolling was “no big deal.”

Finally, as you would expect with a mod like this, there is a nice tutorial with plenty of images, you know, just in case you are feeling brave and have some time on your hands.
