As if Asus didn’t have enough models already, we are seeing the trend continue again towards larger netbooks, that while not quite full fledged notebooks, are not true netbooks either. The latest example of this phenomena is the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1101A.
The standout feature of this model is the 11.6″ display. With the larger screen size comes a welcome bump in the resolution to 1366 x 768, which would be 720p for an HDTV if you’re keeping count. To drive that screen is the Intel GMA 500, which can do HD video. Apparently with that chipset, the ubiquitous Atom N270 is not compatible, so its lower powered brother, the Z520 gets the nod. While this processor switch is good for battery life to offset the larger screen, it also has less performance when it comes to number crunching. Rounding out the package is the netbook standards of 1 GB of RAM, 160 GB hard drive, and Windows XP. Draft N WiFi, and Bluetooth will keep the 1101A connected.
The battery is a 4400 mA unit, that Asus thinks is good for over 8 hours. I’ll reserve judgment till someone actually puts a stopwatch to it. In its favor the battery is removable. The styling preserves elements of its seashell heritage.
It currently is not available in the states, but is expected soon. In the meantime, it is available in Great Britain for 379 pounds starting in July.
